Boost Mindfulness with These 3 Creative Drawing Exercises

Ever feel stuck in your thoughts or routines? A simple way to shake things up is by changing how you create.

This week, we explored three creative exercises that encourage new perspectives, release tension, and help you tune into your emotions—all through drawing. No artistic skill required, just a willingness to experiment.

Grab a pen and some paper, and let’s dive in.

What Happens When You Draw with Your ‘Wrong’ Hand? Try & See

Switching hands may seem like a small change, but it forces your brain to work differently. It slows you down, shifts your focus, and invites a fresh perspective.

Instead of aiming for perfection, this exercise is about letting go and noticing what happens.

Try this:

  1. Pick up a pen or pencil and draw with your non-dominant hand.
  2. Don’t worry about how it looks—just focus on the feeling.
  3. Notice if it feels awkward, playful, frustrating, or freeing.

Stepping outside of what feels natural can open up new ways of seeing. What did you notice?

Feeling Stuck? Try This Moving Line Exercise & Let Go

Movement plays a big role in how we feel. Whether we’re tense, restless, or energized, our hands and body carry those emotions.

This exercise helps you release tension, tap into flow, and reset your energy—all through simple lines on a page.

Try this:

  1. Grab a pen and start drawing loops, zigzags, or spirals—whatever feels natural.
  2. Move quickly, then slowly.
  3. Pay attention to how your body responds.

Did a particular movement feel grounding or freeing? Sometimes, shifting how we move can shift how we feel.

Discover How Your Mind Feels Today—No Words Required

Some days, it’s hard to put emotions into words. This exercise gives you a visual way to check in with yourself without overthinking.

Using shapes, symbols, or colors, you can capture your current state of mind in a way that words sometimes can’t.

Try this:

  1. Without overthinking, fill a page with shapes, symbols, or colors that reflect your mood.
  2. Let your intuition guide you—don’t plan, just create.
  3. When you’re done, look at your drawing. Does it reflect how you feel?

This is a simple way to process emotions and connect with yourself—no words required.

What Did You Notice?

Each of these exercises invites you to step outside your usual patterns, whether by switching hands, moving differently, or tuning into your emotions visually.
